Q & A with Mike Zohn

Mike Zohn

What's the oddest item that is most requested in the shop?

It's amazing how many people ask for an orbitoclast -- also known as the tool used for a lobotomy. It resembles an ice pick and is/was used to poke through the skull in the eye sockets and into the frontal lobe of the brain.

What's the highest price/oddest item you've ever sold?

The most expensive item was a huge English 19th-century wooden case of drawers filled with specimens, including, eggs, birds, bugs, moths, butterflies, rocks, minerals, seashells, skulls and all kinds of assorted natural history items. It sold for a bit under $20,000.

What items freak you out?

I don't like bugs. They have a horrible smell to them and just freak me out a bit. If there is a case of insects that needs repair of any sort, I let Evan take care of it. She doesn't seem to mind.

What was your oddest customer experience?

We once had a customer who was interested in a Victorian mirror and wanted to know who had looked into the mirror -- as if we had a list of all the people who have looked at their reflection in it over the last 100-plus years! I assured him that it still had plenty of reflections left in it.
