Dr. Bryan Grieg Fry An Associate Professor from the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Queensland in Australia, Bryan is a leading expert on venom and its effects on humans. While collecting venom samples in over forty countries, Bryan has gotten personal with countless deadly animals — from anemones, centipedes, jellyfish and octopus, to Komodo Dragons, insects, scorpions, spiders, snakes and even venomous sharks. He's also been bitten numerous times, but the scientific gain from Bryan's potentially fatal pain has been groundbreaking knowledge on the complex evolutionary history of snake venom — and many other medically significant discoveries. Dr. Linda S. Rayor Dr. Linda S. Rayor is a faculty member in the Department of Entomology at Cornell University. After getting an undergraduate degree in molecular biology at the University of Colorado and realizing the error of her ways, Dr. Rayor switched to studying animal behavior, which was her true interest all along. She received her doctoral degree from the University of Kansas, where she studied mother-offspring dynamics in prairie dogs and other ground squirrels. When her prairie dogs all died of the plague during her dissertation research, Dr. Rayor switched the focus of her research to social spiders. She has studied social spiders in Mexico and Australia. Her current work is focused on how large, predatory huntsman spiders are able to live in large family groups peacefully, and how they differ from other huntsman spider species that are cannibalistic. Dr. Rayor has won numerous teaching awards for her courses on Spider Biology, Insect Behavior, and Conducting Effective Scientific Outreach. Dr. Rayor directs a large K-12 science outreach program that emphasizes backyard biology and natural history in Central New York. |
