This is the site of one of the most recent documented meteorite falls in the United States (February, 15, 2009) with a daytime fireball recorded by a local news station. Steve and Geoff both hunted this location in the past and found many stones.

Steve found the second largest stone at the site. It weighed 1,663 grams. The plan is to hunt for fallen meteorites both visually and with small hand-held detectors. The new Fisher hand-held detectors will come in handy on this hunt.

Steve and Geoff will be joined in West, Texas, by fellow hunter Ruben Garcia and his dog Hopper — the dog credited with finding a meteorite from the Ash Creek fall and bringing it diligently to the porch of his owner. Based on what is known about the size of this strewnfield and the work that Steve and Geoff did in West in February and March, there is more mapping and gridding to be done to determine which areas might still have larger stones to be collected. Steve and Geoff will demonstrate "gridding" — covering every square foot of a fall zone by methodical walking or driving.

Townspeople who witnessed the original fireball will be interviewed by Steve and Geoff to determine if there are any other clues about exactly where more fragments from this recent space rock might be hiding.
