An Idiot Abroad

Everyone's favorite reluctant traveler is back in the departure lounge. But this time Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant are sending Karl Pilkington around the world with a list of the ultimate things to do before you die.

  • China
    Desert Island
    Premiere: Saturday, Jan. 21 at 10PM e/p
Karl's first to-do is to spend a night on a desert island called Vanuatu in the South Pacific. Sounds nice enough - sun, sea, sand and all that. Oh, and then there's two very different types of bungee jumps, some quality time with a Prince Phillip-worshipping tribe, arse-boarding, exotic underwear, an annoying egg cup...

    India
    Trans-Siberian Express
    Premiere: Saturday, Jan. 28 at 10PM e/p
The next bucket list item for Karl is a trip aboard the Trans-Siberian Express. The Trans-Siberian Express, which starts in Russia and goes through Mongolia ending in China, is Karl’s most hated place. He's hoping for luxury, but Ricky and Steve have other ideas...including an intense Russian steam room rubdown, a stop-off at a dwarf village, and being buried alive, for starters!

    Jordan
    Swimming with Dolphins
    Premiere: Saturday, Feb. 4 at 10PM e/p
Karl heads off to Australia to tick off the classic thing to do before you die: swimming with dolphins. But before he even touches soil in Oz, Ricky and Steve have a planned a little stopover in Thailand.

After being given a makeover by the famous "ladyboys" of Thailand, Ricky and Steve line Karl up for a blindfolded Thai Kick boxing contest, and send him off to the countryside to mix with the locals in a village inhabited by 100's of deadly snakes. When Karl finally arrives in Australia he discovers he is not going to swim with dolphins after all, but dive with Great White Sharks.

    Mexico
    Whale Watching
    Premiere: Saturday, Feb. 11 at 10PM e/p
Karl isn’t really prepared for the arctic conditions in Alaska. Ricky and Steve have also made plans for some dog sledding, a meeting with Inuits and a visit to the North Pole. When Karl finally gets to catch his whale watching cruise, he learns that Ricky and Steve booked him on a deep sea fishing trawler -- not exactly a luxury cruise vessel.

    Egypt
    Face to Face with Gorillas
    Premiere: Saturday, Feb. 18 at 10PM e/p
Karl heads of to Africa to go meet a Gorilla. But before he heads off to Uganda, Karl agreed to start in South Africa. He’s been there on holiday and heard it was alright.

Of course, Ricky and Steve want Karl to have an authentic African experience. So they arrange some time in a slum with a family and helping a charity rebuild a shelter. Karl visits a local family and their pet named Jessica the Hippo. Then Ricky sends him to join a Rhino conservation project before heading into the impenetrable Ugandian forest before coming face to face with a Gorilla.

    Brazil
    Route 66
    Premiere: Saturday, Feb. 25 at 10PM e/p
Karl wants to drive along the legendary Route 66 in the USA in an open top Cadillac. But Ricky and Steve have other ideas. Along the way they want him join a high school choir, hang out with New Age therapists and meet the Amish before ending his journey with something called "Wingwalking."

    Peru
    Climb Mount Fuji
    Premiere: Saturday, March 3 at 10PM e/p
Karl’s last bucket list item is seeing Japan’s most spiritual destination: Mount Fuji. His trip begins with a 15-hour trek up to the mountain's summit. Here, he realizes what he really wants to do before he dies. On arrival in Japan, Karl gets lost in Tokyo. Ricky and Steve put him up in a 'capsule' hotel, send him to a Sumo wrestling stable, arrange for a meeting with a Zen Master and send him on the world’s steepest roller-coaster.

    Karl returns
    Karl Comes Home
