Deadly Plants You Should Know

Jimson Weed

Some of your favorite plants are probably poisonous -- think daffodils and paperwhites, rhododendrons and azaleas, buttercups and mistletoe. But plants that truly kill are a bit rare. From the carnivorous to the toxic, here are some plants to keep your eye on.

10. Jimsonweed (Datura stramonium)
What a long, strange, bad bad bad trip it'll be if you eat this weed. Known primarily for the hallucinations it causes, jimsonweed has occasionally been used recreationally, predominantly by people who were probably already a little crazy when they deliberately chose to eat something that was going to cause delusions, hallucinations, convulsions and perhaps death. The plant is sometimes known as the "angel's trumpet" because of its large, beautiful trumpet-shaped flowers. It's also known as the "devil's weed," perhaps for more obvious reasons. We know it as jimsonweed for its role at Jamestown, Va., (you know, "Jimson, Va.") way back in 1676, when a group of British soldiers made themselves a salad out of the stuff. Bad idea. They survived, but according to one account, spent 11 days consumed by hallucinations and delusions before sobering up with no memory of their 17th-century-style psychedelic trip.
