DIY Projects for Kids of all Ages

Ping Pong Ball Catapult

No. 8 - Ping Pong Ball Catapult (Ages 9+)

Homemade construction projects are a lot of fun. Homemade construction projects that fling objects across a room? That's the perfect combination of learning and fun.

A ping pong ball catapult is easy to make, yet it imparts lessons in the value of precision construction and physics. Kids learn about concepts such as launch angle, pull-back angle and trajectory. More advanced students can investigate concepts such as potential energy.

To make the project even more interesting, you can aim the catapult at targets, like a bucket, and use measurements and math skills to try and duplicate your successes.

Required Materials: Rubber bands, ping pong ball, clamp for catapult and a flat table top, catapult consisting of wooden or metal frame
