DIY Projects for Kids of all Ages

Compass

No. 10 - Box Compass (Ages 8+)

Handing your kids the tools they need to navigate their world -- both figuratively and literally -- may be one of the best gifts you can offer. Now you can teach them how to find their way using a compass they construct with their own hands.

Before GPS satellites and detailed maps, compasses were critical devices that helped people find their way through unfamiliar areas. This project familiarizes kids with the concept of navigation by compass. Not only will they have a better understanding of how magnetic forces affect the planet, but they'll also see how they can establish a route using a bearing.

Required Materials: Square box with sides no higher than 2 inches (5.1 centimeters); 1.5-inch (3.8-centimeter) nail with head; one large straightened paper clip; printed compass rose; magnet; glue or tape.
