From Fake Blood to Stink BombsNo. 1 - Making a Volcano The erupting volcano project is a classic science fair-style project showing an impressive reaction between an acid and a base. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) meets vinegar (acetic acid) producing carbonic acid, which quickly decomposes into water and carbon dioxide. This is just one of many experiments to show that an acid plus a base creates water plus a salt. Build your own volcano as simple or as detailed as you'd like around the bottle of vinegar in the middle. If you want to repeat the eruption later, build the volcano so the bottle is easy to remove, rinse out and refill with fresh vinegar. Add red food coloring to the vinegar for a lava-colored effect. When you're ready to show off the chemical reaction, drop a spoonful of baking soda into the vinegar and stand back to enjoy the foam eruption. There are practical uses for this project, too: Add baking soda, then vinegar, to a slow drain as a safe alternative to drain opener.
