This Week's Stories

We'll bring you the latest on the following science topics on Discoveries This Week.

Prolonging Life
A scientific method that can literally add years to your life ... sound too good to be true? Well, it's not. Researchers have found that dramatically limiting food intake — by a whopping 30 per cent — can prolong life ... at least in mice and monkeys! The question is, can the so-called "caloric restriction" diet actually make humans live longer? We'll find out!

Those Sounds
There's nothing worse than the sound of finger nails on a chalk board ... well, except for maybe the sound of a dentist's drill! Well, in case you've ever wondered why exactly those sounds make us cringe, science might have a few answers.

Dry Horses
They say you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. Horses being prepared for a big race must get enough water in advance so they don't get too dehydrated. Now, technology has found a way to keep those horses on track ... and headed to the winner's circle.

Plane Escape
Traveling can be dangerous. Roads can get slippery ... seas can get rough ... and your plane can crash. But, as Mark Miller reports, being prepared for the worst is the best way to stay safe. So hold your breath while we check out a new device that lets pilots train for what they hope never happens — an underwater crash!

Bullpin
Rodeo bullriding is one of the most dangerous sports around. Not only do riders have to contend with cuts, bruises and broken bones, but some situations are truly life-threatening. A new invention called the "bullpin" promises to make things a lot safer.
