Those little mounds of dirt you see ants piling up are only the tip of the iceberg. Underground, ants are very efficient at building large nests with many different rooms and passages. All this digging adds up: ants move an estimated 50 tons of soil per year in one square mile! Not all ants even live underground; many prefer trees, old logs, etc.
