How To Build A Fire

Method 3: The Tried-and-True Magnifying Glass

Everyone knows starting a fire with a magnifying glass lens is pretty easy. Simply hold the lens about a foot away from a pile of tender, angle it toward the sun, and you'll have a blazing hot focal point in seconds. But what if you don't happen to have a magnifying glass? You can use a lens from a pair of binoculars or your own eyeglasses to achieve the same result. Not only that, but you can even use the polished bottom of a soda can as well. The reflective surface acts like a rudimentary convex lens.
