1: Giant Squid
After more than 2,000 years of stories and tons of fish tales, the first live giant squid was filmed off Japan's Ogasawara Islands in 2004.
Jules Verne was smiling from somewhere.
2: Demon Duck of Doom
Perhaps George Lucas was thinking about Bullockornis when he made Howard the Duck.
Bullockornis, nicknamed the carnivorous "Demon Duck of Doom," stood over 10 feet tall and lived c.15 million years ago in Australia. Almost as scary as Howard.
3: Giant Dragonfly
Meganeura monyi , or giant dragonfly, had a wingspan of over 3 feet and flew over Europe roughly 300 million years ago.
It's the largest flying insect species ever known to exist.
4: Giant Prehistoric Crocodile
Don't tell Toho Co, but Godzilla might have been from South America.
The fossilized remains of Dakosaurus andiniensis, a prehistoric crocodile that scientists named Godzilla, after the Japanese creature, were found in South America in 2005.
5: Giant Sea Scorpion
Don't let the picture fool you. This giant sea scorpion, found in Germany in 2007, was probably over 8-feet high with a creepy 18-inch long claw.
Don't worry, it's safe to go back in the water. It lived about 390 million years ago.
6: Thirteen-Foot Tall Camel
Most everyone has heard the old saying "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
Religion aside, it would be doubly hard for this a 13-foot camel -- twice the size of a modern one -- to squeeze through anything.
This big guy is around 100,000 years old and was found in Syria.
7: Giganotosaurus
Yes, that's really its name. Giganotosaurus carolinii makes T. Rex look like the kid picked last for the basketball team.
A large Giganotosaurus weighed in at at about 6.2 tons and stood about 43.3 ft high. Don't go feeling bad, Giganto might have been big, but all of him wasn't enormous. His brain was the size of a banana.
8: Giant Peccary
Though only about the size of a large dog, the giant peccary, a pig-like animal, is much, much bigger than its brothers and sisters.
We don't need Charlotte and her web to tell us that the giant peccary, found in the Amazon jungle, is some pig.
9: Liopleurodon Ferox
Liopleurodon ferox is another creature that may not be as big as originally thought. At first scientist believed the prehistoric sea creature averaged about 82 feet long, but eventually had to revise their estimates downward.
10: Giant Rodent
Turns out the world's largest rodent is from Uruguay, not New York.
In January of 2008 researchers uncovered the remains of the enormous creature and guessed that, back when it was alive, the rodent weighed about 1 ton.
A few months later scientist revised their estimates and now say the big guy probably tipped the scales at about 770 lbs - still not the kind of thing you want to find crawling through your cupboards.
