Pharaohs Abandon the Valley (ca. 1070 B.C.)

The "Year of the Hyenas" marked a turning point for the Valley of the Kings.  It had become obvious that the royal necropolis was no longer a safe resting place for Egypt's rulers.  Turning their backs on 500 years of tradition, the Pharaohs decided to completely abandon the valley.  With no more tombs for the royal craftsmen to build, Deir el-Medina became a ghost town. Finally, priests came to the valley to open up every royal tomb they could find. All the remaining Pharaohs' mummies were moved to a new home: a small, secret cave outside the valley known as Deir el-Bahri.
