SURVIVORMAN: THE SWAMP
The Location: Altamaha River Basin, Georgia
The Ecosystem: Swamp
The Challenge: Survive seven days after being marooned on narrow stretch of solid ground.
The Supplies: A tin, a rope, a comb, bubble gum, a credit card, a broken lighter, two pieces of tissue, a Swiss army knife, 50 pounds of camera equipment and a harmonica.
The swamplands of Georgia's Altamaha River Basin are all that one would expect of a primordial bog: dank, foreboding, swimming with slithering creepy-crawlies and, of course, alligator-infested.
Les' first task is to locate a dry site to set up camp. When he finds a suitable spot, however, it's crawling with burrowing, parasitic chiggers. To avoid playing host, he has to burn away the top layer of ground. The next pressing concern is fresh water — the brackish, amoeba-packed swamp water is not an option.
On the seventh day, Les sets out on a raft of his own construction hoping to intersect with one of the main river channels and return to civilization. Will Les find his way? Will he get lost? Find out in Survivorman: The Swamp.
SURVIVORMAN: SONORAN DESERT
The Location: Sonoran Desert, Southwest U.S.A.
The Ecosystem: Desert
The Challenge: Simulate a dirt-bike breakdown and spend a week alone in the desert.
The Supplies: A broken-down dirt bike, one bottle of water and 50 pounds of camera equipment.
The Sonoran Desert covers an area of approximately 120,000 square miles. It is an arid, barren environment with scorching daytime highs and freezing overnight lows. Despite this, a number of rich ancient cultures once called the desert home. Now it's Les Stroud's turn.
Riding a dirt bike into the official middle of nowhere, Les simulates a breakdown. Over the next couple of days he gets a fire started and weaves a mattress and blanket set from desert grass and electrical wiring salvaged from the bike. He ekes out calories by snacking on live bark scorpions and the fruit of the strawberry pincushion. The creosote bush has 69 active anti-bacterial agents, so Les stays clean by taking smoke baths over burning creosote.
Les needs to find a water source or suffer the ravages of dehydration. He sets up camp under a sheltering juniper tree near a stream and keeps the growing hunger pains at bay by drinking constantly.
Can Les survive the ordeal before "rescuers" show up? Find out in Survivorman: Sonoran Desert.
