SURVIVORMAN: MOUNTAIN
The Location: Canadian Rockies
The Ecosystem: Mountain
The Challenge: Simulate heli-hiking expedition gone bad and survive seven days atop snow-covered peak.
The Supplies: A broken camcorder and tripod, spare videotape, an emergency blanket, walking stick, cramp-ons, a multi-tool, 50 pounds of (functional) camera equipment and a harmonica.
At this altitude survival depends on warmth, and warmth can only be guaranteed by shelter. A night of near-hypothermic misery convinces Les that his best chances of lasting a week rely on making it down to the tree line.
Les has been provided with a few readily salvageable items, among them a broken camcorder and tripod — one man's trash is another man's treasure. Using the tripod as a frame and lengths of videotape, he soon has a roof over his head. While it will protect him against the elements, it will not keep out the local wildlife: grizzlies, cougars and wolves.
When the "rescue chopper" finally homes in on his signal fire after a long, wet week, Les' relief is palpable.
SURVIVORMAN: CANYONLANDS
The Location: Utah
The Ecosystem: Canyonlands
The Challenge: Find way back to civilization within seven days after riding mountain bike deep into wilderness.
The Supplies: A mountain bike, a multi-tool, a magnesium flint stick, an old energy bar and 50 pounds of camera equipment.
The spectacular red landscapes of Utah's Canyonlands are as beautiful as they are inhospitable. Some of the most isolated canyons in the American Southwest, these nooks and crannies harbor a dense population of mountain lions. The area was once home to a sparse population of Anasazi and Piute Native Americans, who managed to carve an existence out of the harsh environment.
Like outlaws of old who were known to eat their own horses out of desperation, Les will cannibalize his mountain bike for parts. After a few days without food, he moves on in search of sustenance. A day's trek takes him 1,000 feet into a canyon in search of a stream. A small cave in the ravine wall offers a convenient shelter, although the nearest water is a half-hour away under the frozen surface of a small pool.
Will Les make it back to civilization on his own? Find out in Survivorman: Canyonlands.
