The Wreck of the Portland

On Thanksgiving weekend in 1898, the 291-foot paddlewheel passenger ship Portland was caught in a fierce blizzard off the New England coast and vanished without a trace. Struggling through raging seas and wind gusts clocked up to 100 miles per hour, the Portland and all 192 people aboard were lost. Little of the shipwreck and few victims were ever recovered, deepening the mystery surrounding her disappearance. Recently the location of the wreck of the Portland, sitting on the ocean floor just 20 miles north of Cape Cod, was verified.

Follow the timeline to trace the ship's last hours, as well as her disappearance, discovery and new attempts to learn the truth about her fate.
