Cassini
Cassini Mission Timeline
Cassini snaps a photo of asteroid 2685 Masursky from 1.6 million kilometers away.
Images of Asteroid 2685 Masursky: Jan. 23, 2000
The Cassini spacecraft enters the solar system's asteroid belt — a ring of small rocky bodies between Mars and Jupiter — and snaps images of asteroid 2685 Masursky. The photos allow scientists to estimate the asteroid's size for the first time, as well as provide preliminary evidence that it may be composed of different materials than previously believed.
